A polarizing filter allows passage of certain light wave components. By attaching this filter in between the camera lens and light, direct reflections, such as those caused by gloss, can be eliminated as shown in the figure below.

Application
Light "1" is polarized in the direction of "2" by filter A. The light is reflected on the glass surface and the reflected light "3" is blocked by filter B. However, the light reflected on the object diffuses again (light "4") , part of which (light "5") enters the camera.
