What is Marking?

Marking is printing or displaying characters, symbols, or marks on any industrial product. When categorized by purpose, marking can be divided into "source marking" and "direct marking".

Source Marking

Source marking is used for product contents. These markings are pre-printed on containers before they are used in production lines. This includes brand names, product names or checkout barcodes for retailers.

Direct Marking

Direct marking is used for quality and traceability purposes. This type of printing is performed during the production process. Examples of these markings are: lot number, expiration date and serial numbers. These numbers ease the process of recording quality issues during production in case a recall from the market is necessary.

Direct marking is in the spotlight now! While users (or customers) watch product quality closely, reliable marking promotes quality and improves product image. KEYENCE supports manufacturers in every industry by developing devices for industrial direct marking.
